An architectural marble fountain basin combining sculptural form with the rich contrast of polychrome marble. The basin is carved in an elegant quatrefoil, or four-lobed clover shape, and supported by a finely shaped baluster stem.

Below, an imposing pedestal anchors the composition. Bold scrolls bring movement to its architectural silhouette, while contrasting marble inlays add color and depth. The interplay of curved forms, carved details and decorative stonework gives the piece a strong presence from basin to base.

Both a functional form and a sculptural object, this fountain would make a distinctive focal point in a courtyard, conservatory or entrance hall.

Attributed to Southern Italy, probably Naples, late 17th century.
