French Restoration Mahogany Daybed, French circa 1820

H 47.2 × L 90.6 × D 37.8 inches.

An impressive French Restoration-period daybed in mahogany and mahogany veneer, distinguished by its generous proportions, sweeping lines and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts.

The high, scrolled back rises above a long upholstered seat, while sculptural lion heads and paw feet lend a commanding presence to the lower end. Delicate gilt-bronze ornaments along the frame provide a refined contrast to the mahogany's rich tones.

Upholstered in deep green velvet patterned with gold rosettes, the daybed combines architectural strength with the softness of its textile covering. Its substantial scale makes it a striking focal point, equally suited to a classical setting or a thoughtfully layered contemporary interior.

France, circa 1820. Attributed to Pierre-Antoine Bellangé.
